As a mom we feel the pressure of making our life social media and Pinterest worthy – well I'm all about forgetting that and documenting moments and memories. It's so much more important to capture the season of life than to create moments that seem perfect! ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Yet, on the other hand, you naturally may be the type that can whip together a first day of school sign and if you can I say go for it! I've got some cute ideas for simple and creative signs you can use for back to school pictures! But…

First Day of School Pictures

I guess what I'm trying to say is if you are a Pinterest mama – go for it…if you aren't don't stress about it and use these ideas as a means to capture this special day in your child's life with either a funny first day of school picture or a cute first day of school picture – with little to no prep – either way just whip your camera out and capture the season!

So among the other million things you have to do as a mom to get back into the mode of school – like thinking about school supplies, packing lunches, schedules and routines…take a minute to document the first day of school! No matter your child's age – get creative and silly! I know sometimes as your kids enter into junior high/high school they aren't too thrilled with mom whipping out the camera…but guess what, mom, document it!

Creative First Day of School Pictures

1- T shirts: Use a very large t shirt with the child's graduation year on it and use this t shirt every year for your child…up until graduation. How cool is this? Plus how easy is this…your photo prop and first day of school picture is already planned for the next 12 years!!!!!! BAM! Just like that all of the guess work is out of the question for you- High Five!

2- Create a School Set Up– Using a vintage school desk and props like apples, globe etc create a cute set up and include signage somewhere that indicates the child's school year!

More cute first day of school pictures… remember use these ideas as inspiration and you can make them as simple or as elaborate as you wish! Some can even be created into silly and funny first day of school pictures…it's all in how you plan it with your personality and your child's personality!!

3- Use a letter board to create a funny quote or to include the information for the child's grade, age, school, teacher etc. I think these letter boards are perfect for the middle school age student. It's not silly, a bit more serious for them but it still let's mama capture the moment!

4- Use a dry erase board – Get creative with the information you want to put on it…you can get some really fun colors in the dry erase markers now and have fun with letting your student help you design this board to hold!

5- Chalkboard – Use a chalk board to create the child's grade, date, age, school name etc.

6- Create a simple backdrop – using strips of plastic table cloths, bulletin board paper or fabric – create a backdrop for your child to stand in front of or jump!

7- Use the School Sign– Arrive at school early and let your student get a picture in front of their school sign! How easy is that?!

8- Use their new backpack- Every child likes to pick out their new backpack for the coming school year! It's special to them and usually indicates their personality – just grab a picture of them with their new backpack at your front door!

9- School uniforms- Does your student wear a school uniform? Capture them in front of the school sign or your front door or even the classroom door in their uniform! There is nothing wrong with keeping it simple!

10- Take a first day of school picture with their new teacher!

11- Go the easy route get a personalized back to school sign you can just fill in with chalk paint pens and you'll have all of the kiddos milestones and information on it in the picture!

12- Drivers – Are they a high schooler that's just started driving? Get them to roll down their window and document the first day along with them driving to school – hopefully they won't roll their eyes at this idea!!

13- Create a banner – Grab a pre made bunting banner and with a thick black marker write the child's grade and let them hold the banner! If you are a a DIY mama make your own with construction paper and twine!

14- Getting on the bus? Have them turn around for a quick second and smile…or if that would be too embarrassing get them walking to the bus!

15 – Side walk chalk- Write on your driveway/porch or side walk the child's grade and have them sit next to it! SIMPLE idea there for you!

16 Make an All About Me Craft – take their picture with a craft you do together before they go back to school!

17 Crafty Kids? – Keep them busy a few days before school by letting them craft and make their own back to school sign. Whether they draw and color or they use props…let their creativity and art work shine!
