what to take to the beach with a baby

We did it! Our kickoff family vacation, merely the iii of united states of america: me, my 9 calendar month former son, Luca, and my hubby, Lu. The trip was everything we hoped it would be and more – and we packed (near) perfectly! And I'm going to share with y'all what we packed, what we should've packed, and what nosotros packed but didn't demand to take packed.

Commencement, let me preface this post with the following:

  • Luca was nine months old at the time of this mail service.
  • We were on a vacation for a week, a Saturday to a Friday
  • I'one thousand a breastfeeding mother, and thus, I didn't bring any bottles with me and I don't demand formula. I also nurse my son (since I work from dwelling house), so I don't demand an abundance of frozen milk, and so I pumped and dumped while on vacation. If y'all need formula, bottles, etc, you plain need to add those appropriate items to your packing listing!
  • Nosotros stayed at a hotel without a kitchen. We didn't stay at a house, then we didn't have access to a kitchen. We chose our hotel around the type of trip we wanted. Nosotros didn't want to become to a massive hotel with an elevator, standard hotel rooms, etc. We wanted to be able to walk out our front door and be on the embankment, and so that we wouldn't be stuck on a tiny hotel balcony or in the room. We didn't desire to have to walk through a large property to get anywhere, we wanted everything quick and accessible. Nosotros researched dozens of hotels and finally landed on The Cove Eleuthera, for their Ocean Front Master Cove Suites, which are literally, steps from their serene beach.
  • IMPORTANT: We used a Nest cam as our baby monitor. We wanted to be able to be outside past the embankment (literally almost the aforementioned distance from the baby's room to our room at habitation) while the baby napped (per my point to a higher place), and then the Nest cam came in handy, considering it's Wi-fi enabled, and so it can be used without a "reach" limit (for example, many cameras disconnect after moving a certain distance from the monitor itself.) HOWEVER, at that place was ane 24-hour interval when the WiFi was spotty, then in retrospect, we wished we brought a regular baby monitor for backup.
  • Nosotros are doing babe led weaning with our son, and then we don't employ pouches, pureed foods, or anything like that. If you are choosing traditional weaning, you lot'll demand to pack those items (pouches, etc.)

Tips for before your trip and traveling

  • I wrote a full blog post on my travel tips after my first holiday with the baby (you lot can read that here)
  • Contact the hotel and see if they accept an infant motorcar seat for employ so that y'all don't have to pack one – they did and nosotros arranged them to accept it in the van that they picked us upwards at the airport in. Nosotros also bundled the same for when we left.
  • Contact the hotel and enquire if they accept cribs or Pack and Plays and pack accordingly. Nosotros found out they had Pack and Plays, then we asked for a photograph of it so we'd know the make and size and then brought sheets for information technology (nosotros wanted to make sure the sheets were washed in our detergent, because babies have such sensitive skin we didn't want to risk a breakout/rash.)
  • Ergobaby babe carrier – we actually forgot this (and survived), only it'due south an essential for airport travel and would've been overnice for some of the walks we took around the hotel property.
  • Babyzen YOYO stroller – LIFESAVER, especially since we forgot the Ergobaby. So impressed with this stroller and information technology was bang-up to take with our travel layovers, etc. You can bring this as a conduct-on!

The packing list

Here is what we packed for a weeklong holiday with a infant/infant:

The essentials
  • White noise machine for sleep – nosotros use our iPad at home for this with the SoundSleeper App, and so we brought that (with a charger, of course)
  • Baby sunscreen – we brought this 6oz tube of Babyganics sunscreen and it was more than enough
  • Babe sunday lid – beloved this 1, because information technology can get wet and dries rapidly in the lord's day
  • Regular baby chapeau – just to shield him from the son at nighttime and when walking effectually the property
  • 2-three baby bathing suits – we brought 3 and used them all, it was prissy to have backups (and our favorites are the ones that are top and bottom separates for easy diaper changes.) Dear this one. Long sleeve rash guards for extra protection from the sun!
  • Travel high chair – information technology allow the states eat on the beach together!
  • For feeding solids: two bibs, GOOtensils, Grabease fork, Minimat (nosotros used this in the airport, not on holiday)
  • ane loving cup for drinking water – whatever you apply, we used this i, but this one is amazing if your infant's ready for it.
  • Reusable laundry bags or gallon-sized Ziploc bags for wet clothes (y'all could also just use your diaper bag's laundry pocketbook)
  • 1 infant coverup
  • Clothes – we packed 2 outfits per mean solar day (ane for morning breakfast and ane for dinner) and that'south all we needed, since nosotros were on the embankment all twenty-four hour period and we'd reuse the forenoon outfit for him to slumber in during twenty-four hours naps, but if you lot desire to be extra safe, you could pack 2.5 outfits (in case of accidents, etc.) We packed mostly tank top one pieces and he lived in those.
  • Diapers – bring more than than you think you'd need. Nosotros brought 32 diapers and it was enough, but we were downwards to five the concluding day and got nervous! Babies poop more when they're eating foods they're non used to, I found out!
  • Swim diapers – we brought these disposable swim diapers, simply per my annotation in "Wish we would have packed" beneath, I would bring two reusable diapers next time instead.
  • Embankment tent – I tin't recommend this tent plenty! It shaded Luca perfectly and it has an area that y'all tin can plough into a pool, but we didn't use that feature. It stayed up in the wind and was like shooting fish in a barrel to gather/breakup and fit right in our checked luggage.
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Shampoo/trunk wash – we brought a travel sized one from Babyganics and it was more than enough. Nosotros bathed Luca in the shower with us every night!
  • Vaseline or whatever diaper cream you employ
  • Diaper rash cream (only in example!)
  • Insect repellant – we honey the Babyganics and ZOE Organics brands.
  • Babe moisturizer – so important! He was in the water a lot and it would've easily stale out his skin if nosotros didn't moisturize him at night. Dear Babyganics.
  • NoseFrida and oogiebear – for boogers and runny olfactory organ!
  • Fabric bibs and burp cloths
  • Bottle soap – we used this for his pacifiers, eating utensils, water straw loving cup, my pump bottles, etc.
  • Blanket/sleep sack for bedtime (and a backup, in instance he/she spits up, etc)
  • Pacifiers
  • Baby Tylenol & ear thermometer  – so happy we had this, he got a 102.seven fever while on holiday and if it wasn't for Tylenol, nosotros would've been in trouble!
  • Babyganics hand sanitizer – many people pass through hotels, this is dandy to have on manus for yourself at the restaurants!
  • Wipes – More than yous think you lot need. We brought 3 full packs and used them all!
  • Toys – we packed a little beach-friendly nylon bag of toys for the beach – but stuff from home that we know would work well on the beach like assurance, some of his bath toys, music toys, etc. Nosotros also bought a brand new parcel of beach toys (shovel, bucket, etc) which was nice to use in the sand with Luca.
  • A few books for night
  • Baby monitor of choice (per my preface non, nosotros used the Nest cam)
  • Beach blanket – we dear this one because it's huge, sand comes off easily, and it rolls upwardly well (we use it at home too) – this was not bad because we'd put it under the entrance to the tent that we'd put Luca in so nosotros could lay on it and play with him and if he crawled out of the tent, he could crawl on the blanket.
  • Beach bag to keep all your stuff and the baby's stuff in (I used a canvas tote handbag from LL Bean and then nosotros could get sand out of it easily)
  • Snacks/nutrient in case the airport doesn't accept anything you can give him (again, per my preface above, we practise BLW.) These also come in handy once you lot're at the resort to give the baby as "appetizers" while y'all're waiting for the food to make it or once again, if there are limited options on the menu.
    • Nosotros brought LARA BARs, 2 of Dave's Killer Bread, ii bananas, travel packets of almond butter, and these good for you O'south

Nice to accept (and glad we had them!) – but not essential
  • Inflatable tub – this isn't absolutely essential, but it was SO nice to have – he loved splashing around in it next to our embankment chairs and we floated him in the sea in it a lilliputian too!
  • 1 baby towel
  • Travel fan – we bought this to put on the stroller but it ended up coming in handy because it was extremely hot and boiling in the Bahamas, so nosotros put it in his tent on the beach and it kept him cool – and he loved playing with it!
  • Johnson's baby powder – someone told me this helps go sand off and it'southward Then truthful, makes it so easy to get sand off the hard parts, as well.
  • Bubbles – it was dainty to have inside the eating house to help keep him happy while we waited for food
  • Spray bottle – information technology got really hot and it was overnice to apply on Luca to cool him down sometimes

Didn't need
  • Luca'south lunchbox
  • Baby shoes – he barely wore socks, just in the airport!
  • This mesh purse we bought.
  • Infant life vest (but glad we have one now!)

Wish we would accept packed
  • Infant detergent. I was going to and didn't have fourth dimension to become to the chemist's shop to get travel bottles and I didn't want to bring my huge detergent bottle. BUT, I would've liked to launder his towel, burp cloths and bibs (I used his body wash instead!)
  • More slices of Dave's Killer Breadstuff – the bread at the hotel was non a bang-up wheat bread, and he loves Dave's Killer Bread, so I wish I had more than (I put it in the refrigerator when we arrived, and so it stayed fresh until we ran out!)
  • Reusable swim diaper – we ordered one only it didn't come up in time, so we had to bring disposable diapers and information technology took up unnecessary room in our suitcase and seems wasteful.
  • Nosotros forgot our trusted Ergobaby! Information technology fabricated aerodrome travel very hard, but luckily nosotros had our stroller.

Tips for when you lot commencement arrive to the hotel

  • Find a dresser or table where you tin can lay everything out for the baby. This includes items that you'll need to take hold of everyday – like diapers, diaper cream, bibs, burp cloths, etc. Don't put things away in the cupboard or in the bathroom (except for applicable items, similar shampoo/body launder.) You want the to be easily seen and accessible. Plus, when the cleaning staff comes into the hotel room, they won't touch that table, since information technology's conspicuously organized for the baby.  You'll be less stressed! Don't put any of your adult stuff on it, keep it strictly baby!
  • Decide where you're going to sleep the babe and set upwards his bed right away. We chose the cupboard (it was simply and then bright in the room, he would've never slept anywhere else) with the door partially open up and then he slept in our bed at night (because he ended up getting a petty sick and we felt safer with co-sleeping.)

Here'southward what our dresser wait like (and inside the dresser was the baby's dress):
